Stacy Skaggs is the host of the television show “In the Crosshairs Hunting” and a Pro-staffer with Northern Michigan Outfitters. Recently, he was sent one of Outdoor Pro Gear’s Lighthouse Beacon 1000 (LHB-1000) headlamps to test. He’s not normally a fan of headlamps because they’re not comfortable and they aren’t bright enough to do what he wants them to do. But that all changed when he turned on the LHB-1000.
In this video, Stacy walks us through his month-long field-testing of the LHB-1000 and what conclusions he reached. Well worth the watch if you’ve been thinking about buying one.
We had a little fun this evening going out and doing some photo testing with our LHB-1000 headlamp. People are always sending me their pictures and I thought maybe we’d try our own. I wasn’t disappointed. This really shows what we mean when we talk about the LHB’s convex lens focusing technology. It really gives a nice even distribution of light rather than a small bright beam in the middle with ambient light surrounding it. It’s hard to beat the power of 1000 lumen with a convex lens!

We were super excited when we found out that Chris Colbert, aka That Hiking Guy, had bought one of our headlamps and was going to do a video review of it! It really doesn’t need any introduction. Here it is:
If there is one question that many customers have asked me, it is this:
Do we have green and red filters for the LHB-1000 headlamp.
The answer is: We are working on it but we don’t have them yet.
First off… why would you want a filter on your headlamp or flashlight?
Green filter: Green filters are mostly used in hunting because green lights don’t frighten animals. They are also used in tactics A green beam can’t be seen from aside and makes it impossible to disclose your exact location.
Red filter: Red light is good if you need to see but don’t want to disturb your night vision. Great for reading maps and navigating. Also can be used as a signal light.
Today we received an email from a customer who made his own green filter. He was kind enough to take pictures to share with everyone.
He started with a Butler Creek Flip-Open Scope Cover that fits over the head of the LHB-1000 headlamp.

It’s a tight fit… but it does go on.

He bought his at Gander Mountain. I bought mine on Amazon.
He then bought a hard plastic green plate. (You could do red.) You can find one at a dollar store or party supply store.

He put painters tape on the plate and cut it to match the lens of the flip-cover. He then glued it onto the inside with silicon glue, leaving the original lens in place.

And there’s the result! Pretty good! I think it’s brilliant that he used a flip-cover lens. This allows him to use the headlamp with or without the filter when he is in the field or simply take the entire unit off when he isn’t using it at all.

Batteries are an essential part of any headlamp. Actually… the battery you chose is more important than you might think.
When we tested the LHB-1000 headlamp, the various batteries we used made a HUGE difference in the how long the headlamp ran and made some difference in how bright it was.
The bottom line was this: Choose the best battery you can buy. Disposable or rechargeable… buy the best. It most definitely makes a difference.
One consideration when buying batteries is whether you should buy disposable or rechargeable. Do rechargeable batteries save you money in the long run? Kim Komando (The Digital Goddess) posted a wonderful article today addressing that exact question. It is well worth the read and should answer the question for you.
